"My
idea of an ideal village is that of a complete republic, and independent
of it's neighbours for its own vital wants, and yet dependent for
many others in which dependence is a necessity. Such a village will
contain intelligent people whose first concern of the village should
be to grow its own food, and then only, all communities will live
together in harmony.
The
curse of untouchability, intoxicating drinks and drugs will not
exist. Women will enjoy the same rights as men. People in villages
will not in dirt and darkness as animals. No one will wallow in
luxury. The village community should take up the responsibility
for providing work to all able-bodied people and every one will
have to contribute his quota of manual labour".
--Gandhiji's Vision of an Indian Village |
India is a land of villages. National development in India is possible
only with the development of its six-lakh villages. The problems
faced by the rural communities are far more than those faced by
their urban counterparts. There is a perceptible 'divide' between
urban and rural areas including 'rural markets'.
The
rural population, of late, has shown a trend of wanting to move
in to a state of gradual urbanization in terms of exposure, habits,
lifestyles and consumption patterns of goods and services. This
movement and aspiration is still further accentuated by mass media,
which today penetrates 98.9% of all areas, urban and rural. This
is actually making for a generation in rural India that wants to
migrate physically, emotionally and inspirationally for sure, to
the urban mode of living! To reduce the rural urban divide and also
to create a meaningful, rewarding living for rural communities in
the countryside, certain institutional linkages that could work
as 'links' between various sectors and rural communities may go
a long way. Centre for Rural Studies is such a 'link'.
Center
of Rural studies, a community window of Manipal University strives
to achieve at least certain of gandhian principles. |
